Bungie Working on Destiny 2?

Destiny is a huge success, which I’m sure will come as no surprise to anyone either playing the game or watching the hype surrounding its launch back in September. Developer Bungie has always said that Destiny as a project is something that would last at least a decade, and now Activision has confirmed Destiny 2 is already in development.

The confirmation was made during Activision’s latest earnings report. So far 9.5 million users have been registered in Destiny, but the player count will actually be lower than that due to the different profiles of a single player being registered as separate users. Even so, Destiny has millions of players meaning a second game was inevitable.

Anyone who paid $60 to play Destiny is entitled to be a little concerned that Bungie could be moving its attention away from the first game so soon after launch. However, that doesn’t seem to be the case. Although Destiny 2 has been confirmed, so have multiple expansion packs for Destiny, with details of the first already available. That means continued new content and therefore support to fix the bugs and introduce new features/story arcs.

It wouldn’t make much sense for Bungie and Activision to walk away from Destiny development. Those millions of players are going to end up being the early adopters for Destiny 2, and the more issues they sort out in the first game over the coming months should lead to a better implemented second game. We also shouldn’t expect to see Destiny 2 released before 2016 based on typical game development cycles, meaning there’s a couple of years where Destiny has to continue to perform to earn revenue and keep players enthused.

According to Activision, Destiny is “the largest new franchise launch in video game history” and features in the top 10 of largest game launches in the US. That’s reflected in the publisher’s revenue for the third quarter, which totals $753 million (it’s biggest quarter ever), and sees a massive increase over the same period last year ($691 million).
