Evolve Alpha comes to PS4 and PC today.

Evolve Big Alpha PC

The "Big Alpha" for 2015's much-anticipated 4v1 shooter Evolve comes to PlayStation 4 and PC today, following its launch yesterday exclusively for Xbox One.

The alpha will be available to download on PS4 and PC today starting at 9 AM PDT / 12 Noon EDT / 4 PM GMT. If you preordered a copy of the game, you're guaranteed a spot. The alpha ends on Sunday, November 2.

2K Games and developer Turtle Rock Studios have also released a new "Kraken Interactive Trailer" for Evolve, which you can see below. It allows you to see a match unfold from five different perspectives.

Evolve was originally targeted to launch this year, but it was recently delayed to February 10, 2015. The game's developer, Turtle Rock, also created the Left 4 Dead series. In Evolve, four players fight together to take down a fifth player, who takes on the role of a monster with unique (and deadly) attributes.

Evolve was originally a THQ game, but when the company went bankrupt, 2K Games parent company Take-Two Interactive bought the game during an auction for $10.9 million.

Smaller and Cheaper Xbox One in 2015?

With the PS4 and Xbox One both coming up to their one-year anniversaries, you can bet that behind the scenes Sony and Microsoft are hard at work trying to save costs on the components inside. Components get combined, parts get smaller, and ultimately the console gets cheaper to manufacture.

In the case of the Xbox One, AMD’s Senior SOC Physical Design Manager has accidentally leaked an important piece of information: AMD has developed a cost-reduced 20nm version of the console’s APU. The existing model of the Xbox One ships with a 28nm APU at its heart, but moving to 20nm brings with it a number of advantages. A smaller APU is cheaper to manufacture, but it’s also more efficient meaning it requires less cooling. That in turn means Microsoft wins some space back inside the Xbox One case, can use a smaller, quieter fan, and makes a little more profit on each Xbox One sold.

xbox_one_internals_02

The Xbox One is struggling to compete with the PS4 right now and Microsoft needs every advantage it can get to make the console stand out. One way it could do that is to introduce a slim version of the hardware earlier in the lifecycle. By switching to a 20nm APU that’s certainly possible, and possible next year if the revised APU is ready to go.

A slim Xbox One offers a big marketing opportunity for Microsoft, but also the chance to reduce the sale price further. The Xbox One is currently on offer until January at a $350 price point, but with a slim model that could become the new permanent price, or maybe it could be offered even cheaper than that? Initially a Slim machine may cost more due to retooling costs, but the reduced size means less materials, weight, and packaging so it’s worthwhile long term to do it.

xbox_one_internals

One thing Microsoft must not do is compromise on build quality or noise levels in order to ship a smaller machine. However, managing to do so could offer a major boost to sales, especially if combined with a price cut.

We can’t forget about Sony in this equation, though. The PS4 also uses a 28nm APU, so we have to assume a 20nm version of that chip is also in the works. But Sony doesn’t have as much pressure on it right not to change things due to holding such a large sales lead over the competition. It can afford to wait and watch what Microsoft does then react.

Part of Assassin's Creed Unity set during World War II ?!

alt text

Ubisoft has released a mysterious trailer for Assassin's Creed Unity today that suggests that at least one section of the upcoming game will be set during World War II.

In the trailer, which Ubisoft calls "Time Anomaly," we see Unity hero Arno in Paris running across rooftops in French Revolution era Paris when a voice calls out:

"Assassin, watch out. The French Revolution simulation is collapsing. I don't know what time period you'll land in, but you need to get out of there. Run!"

Arno runs, and in a flash, we see him in what appears to be World War II era France. He climbs the Eiffel Tower and from the top, mans a machine gun and fires at an enemy plane.

In the video's description on YouTube, Ubisoft teases: "In Assassin’s Creed Unity, all of French Revolution Paris is yours to explore, and perhaps more."

Interestingly, World War II is one of the most-requested eras for a future Assassin's Creed game, according to previous comments from Ubisoft. Others include ancient Egypt and feudal Japan.

Unity is coming to Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. Meanwhile, Ubisoft will also release Assassin's Creed Rogue on November 11, but for last-generation consoles.

Get to Know with the Modes of PES 2015.

Pro Evolution Soccer 2015, also known as PES 2015, is gearing up for its imminent release. To get ready, Konami has released a new trailer that focuses solely on the game modes featured as part of the game. This includes both classic modes that have been a part of the series for a while, as well as new modes that will make their debut in this year’s entry. Check out the trailer below to see them all in full gameplay glory.

alt text

The myClub mode seems to be the main focus of the new efforts. This mode revamps features that were previously found in Master League Online. You will use Agents to recruit players and create your own personalized team from real life players and managers. This mode looks like a nearly full blown simulation of a complete Soccer team. All of it is online as well, so you get the added benefit of competition with friends, or random players from around the world.

Other game elements look to reshape the PES 2015 landscape. The live update feature will keep your team and its players all current in their stats and strategies. Coach Mode lets you manage your team however you like. You can also edit the settings of your game by altering their home stadium in many ways. These are just the beginning though, PES 2015 looks to include a ton of content for new and returning players to enjoy.

PES 2015 will be released on November 13th for PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and PC.

Uncharted Collection going to be Re-Released for PS4?

Some are chalking this up as a mistake. I'm not quite as convinced.

In a blog post detailing the new YouTube sharing functionality now available on PS4 as part of the 2.00 firmware update, Sony used a screenshot showing someone uploading an Uncharted 3 clip.

uncharted3ps4

Uncharted 3 is only available on PS3, of course.

Yes, it’s possible that the PS4 could be playing the game on the PlayStation Now streaming service but considering that rumours of an Uncharted Collection release for PS4 have been doing the rounds for some time, that seems like the safe bet.

Could Uncharted Collection release alongside Uncharted 4 next year? It would certainly be consistent with Sony’s existing strategy.

Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune debuted on PS3 in 2007 and was an instant critical hit. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves followed in 2009 and Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception in 2011. Vita spin-off Golden Abyss was released in 2012.

The series’ commercial performance has been slower to catch on, although each entry has enjoyed increased success.

Much More Improved PlanetSide 2 PS4 User Interface.

If you recall, back in August at SOE Live, Sony Online Entertainment told us that much of the work being done on the PS4 version of PlanetSide 2 has been with the UI. Though most of the loadout systems had already been finished back in August, they still had work to do on the map and in-game store. Well, if yesterday's Higby Pls livestream is any indication, SOE has made some progress on the map.

PlanetSide 2 Screenshot - 1172750

Towards the tail-end of the livestream, Higby gave a brief update on the PS4 version of PlanetSide 2, showing off a slew of screenshots of the user interface. Included in his brief update were screenshots of the loadout screen, map, squad list, player interaction menu, and character creation screen.

In the loadout screen, you can now fully load out your weapons and select their attachments. According to Higby, the only thing SOE doesn't have working yet is some of the purchase flow. In terms of the map, they are still "iterating and finalizing," but it looks like the icons are more "easily discernable and cleaner." You'll notice that your friends or outfit mates are now square boxes and your regular troops show up as circles. This look is also going to get moved over to the PC game too.

And no, Higby's face is not actually part of the user interface. Although, I think it would make a lovely addition, right?

So while I don't have a release date to give you, it's at least encouraging to see progress being made on the user interface considering this has taken up the bulk of dev team's focus. SOE maintains that PlanetSide 2 will release on PS4 sometime in 2014. Last week, I predicted that news regarding a release would be shared at PlayStation Experience in December, but I've had no confirmation on this.

You Should not Upadate your PS4 to Firmware Version 2.00 just yet.

PlayStation 4 users may not want to update their consoles to firmware version 2.00 just yet -- at least not until Sony is able to send out a patch that fixes some of the software's hiccups.

Version 2.00, codenamed "Masamune," boasted a number of notable feature updates including uploading gameplay videos to YouTube, sharing games with friends over the Internet and system themes.

However, the update has been tainted by widespread reports that putting the system into standby mode (now dubbed "Rest Mode") prevents the console from reawakening. Both of the consoles in our office encountered the same issue. Bugs with YouTube functionality have also been reported.

For now, Sony has suggested booting consoles into "Safe Mode" to update a system's software and told CNET "we're investigating these issues and will provide an update once we have more information."

Whatever you do, try and avoid unplugging a hanging PS4, as you can damage the system's data.

We expect a version "2.0.1" release at any moment, but also recommend PS4 users who have already updated to 2.00 to select the "turn PS4 off" option instead of Rest Mode until Sony has properly addressed the situation.

The Xbook Duo is a Laptop that Combines an Xbox 360 and Xbox One in One Package?!

Prolific console modder Edward Zarick has revealed his latest creation, and it does not disappoint. The "Xbook Duo" is a laptop that combines an Xbox 360 and Xbox One in one package, solving the problem of backwards compatibility, Zarick says.

The Xbook Duo, which unfortunately is only a prototype and is not for sale, can play either Xbox 360 or Xbox One games with the flip of a switch. Zarick says his creation is the first ever Xbox laptop that features two consoles inside the same packaging.

1In a post on his website and through various videos, Zarick explains in great detail how he created the Xbook Duo. The Xbox 360 guts are oriented on the left side of the unit while the Xbox One components are on the right. The unit requires only one power cable, and the HDMI outputs from both Xboxes run into an HDMI switcher, he says.

You might think that overheating would be an issue, but Zarick says he hasn't seen any overheating problems so far--though it's unclear how many hours he's spent using the device.

Like his previous Xbook One and Playbook 4 (a PlayStation 4 laptop) console mods, the Xbook Duo features a 22" Vizio monitor for on-the-go gaming. If you want to play at home, you can plug the unit into your TV through the HDMI port. Separate Xbox 360 and Xbox One controllers are required, of course, as each controller only works with its respective console.

Zarick did not say if he plans to create a similar modded laptop that includes a PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 in one housing.

On the issue of backwards compatibility, though the Xbox One does not currently support Xbox 360 games, Microsoft teased earlier this month that it may have a solution to the issue to reveal soon.

Both the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 do not support disc-based backwards compatibility like the Wii U does. However, the PS4 does let gamers play PlayStation 3 (and even older) titles through streaming service PlayStation Now. For its part, Microsoft said back in September 2013 that the Xbox One is technically capable of delivering a game-streaming service thanks to the console's cloud servers.

The Long Waited 'Star Wars Battlefront' Coming on Christmas 2015.

Star Wars Battlefront launches Christmas 2015, EA has announced.

EA boss Andrew Wilson made the announcement during a conference call to investors following the release of the company's Q2 2015 financial results.

Star Wars Battlefront, which EA said tonight was its "major first-person shooter" for the year, had been expected summer 2015, so it's been pushed back by a few months. But the release window comes as no surprise: The JJ Abrams' directed movie Star Wars: Episode 7 is due out 18th December 2015.

alt text

Meanwhile, Wilson said the next Battlefield game from developer DICE, presumably called Battlefield 5, will release in the last quarter of 2016.

"Battlefield 4 continues to add new players and engage existing fans a year after launch," he said.

"As a result of the extended services and content updates that we provide, it's clear that players want to experience the games we're delivering for longer periods of time. Looking into next year, we will ensure that our players have enough time between releases to fully explore the depth and innovation in our shooter titles."

Earlier this evening EA confirmed Battlefield Hardline, the spin-off from Visceral, will launch in March 2015.

"Following this launch, our next Battlefield experience is planned for launch in Q3 FY17," Wilson added. Q3 FY2017 is the October to December 2016 period.

"We want to give Battlefield 4 and Battlefield Hardline players more time to enjoy these games and immerse themselves in a game, the live service, and the community."

DICE is busy with a number of major games in development, including Star Wars Battlefront, Battlefield 5 and the new Mirror's Edge game.

Dying Light Coming Only on Next-Gen Consoles.

Dead Island developer TechLand had shelved the past-gen versions of Dying Light, saying the older consoles weren’t powerful enough for the ambitious zombie sandbox.

“After thorough internal testing, we have come to the conclusion that we have no choice but to leave past-gen systems behind and release Dying Light exclusively on the next-gen consoles and PC,” TechLand wrote on Facebook.

“Put simply, older consoles just couldn’t run the game and stay true to the core vision of Dying Light at the same time.

alt text

“To ensure you enjoy Dying Light as much as we would like you to, we chose to release it without any compromises on the three strongest systems available. Thanks to this, you’ll get the full and best experience regardless of the platform you play on.”

So what is it about Dying Light that puts it beyond the reach of the older consoles? A bunch of features and technologies that add up to a “truly next-gen” experience, apparently.

“For instance, up to 200,000 objects can be displayed in the game at once,” TechLand said.

“Add to this our use of realistic, physics-based lighting technology and you really start to push the next-gen systems to the limits.

“Features like these along with our core gameplay pillars – such as the player-empowering Natural Movement, threefold character development system, and vast open world – are all an inherent part of how Dying Light plays. However, combining all of these into one fluid experience is only possible on technologically advanced platforms.”

Dying Light is due in January 2015.

Battlefield Hardline Coming on March.

Battlefield Hardline will be released on March 17, 2015.

Electronic Arts confirmed the release date today as part of its latest earnings report. The game was previously pegged to launch on October 21, but in July, EA delayed the game to add "more innovation."

The new date applies to all platforms: Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and PC. Hardline will launch in Europe on March 19.

For the quarter ended September 30, EA recorded revenue of $1.2 billion, compared to $1 billion during this quarter last year. Overall, EA posted a profit of $232 million for the period, up significantly from the $105 million in profit the company recorded a year ago.

"Electronic Arts continues to put our players first, delivering new experiences, innovation, and new ways to play," EA CEO Andrew Wilson said in a statement. "It was an excellent second quarter, with strong new titles, deep player engagement in our live services, and ongoing digital growth driving continued momentum."

A healthy percentage of EA's revenue during the quarter came from digital channels. Of the $1.2 billion total revenue, $453 million was from digital games and $767 million was physical titles. Last year, the breakdown was $348 million and $692 million, respectively.

For the calendar year so far, EA says it is the top publisher on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, led by games such as FIFA 15, NHL 15, Madden NFL 15, EA Sports UFC, Titanfall, Battlefield 4, and FIFA 14.

During the quarter alone, EA players recorded more than 1.9 billion hours of gameplay across console and PC, the company said.

Madden NFL 15 was one of EA's biggest new releases during the quarter. Though unit sales were not announced, EA said that gamers have played more than 89 million games so far, up 48 percent compared to last year.

On the mobile front, monthly active users for EA games averaged over 155 million during the quarter. Sports games for mobile devices showed particularly strong growth, with games averaging more than 40 million monthly active users during the quarter, which is up 250 percent year-over-year. This success was led by Madden NFL Mobile and FIFA 15 Ultimate Team Mobile, EA said.

The Ultimate Team modes for FIFA, Madden, and NHL were also on the rise, collectively jumping 96 percent year-over-year in terms of net revenue.

For more on player habits for EA games in the last quarter, check out this infographic. It touts huge numbers like 1 billion goals scored in FIFA 15 since launch, 199 million hours logged in Battlefield 4, and over 1.1 billion races completed in Real Racing 3. The infographic also reveals, somewhat unsurprisingly, that Battlefield 4 is the top EA Access game on Xbox One.

Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare New Features Have been Released.

There have already been several leaks of what is set to be in the newest instalment in the COD series, but nothing on the scale of footage that appeared online over the weekend.

Gameplay from an early copy of Advanced Warfare appeared in a Twitch feed on Sunday, which reportedly revealed further features from the game set to hit shelves on November 4.

According to Gamespot, the channel was taken down quickly but revealed a new '30-kill DNA Bomb scorestreak' will be included in the final game.

Killing 30 enemies without dying will activate the bomb, that when detonated, kills enemies and then releases a green mist that spreads throughout the entire map for a limited time.

Another leak has also revealed the option to turn on and off Paintball Effects and has shown the full list of weapon camouflage patterns available on launch.

Game makers have had to grow use to spoilers being released before big launches, but Schofield was left feeling angry at the footage going live so close to launch date.

"We took 3 years 2 make a game," he wrote on Twitter.

"Kept it quiet 4 the fans & it has to be stolen & leaked a week b4. That sucks. A real bummer. Thanks a lot."

Primal Carnage: Extinction Coming to PS4 and PC this November.

Dinosaurs are invading PS4 Q1 2015 courtesy of Primal Carnage: Extinction.

Primal Carnage: Extiniction is a class-based, online multiplayer shooter with one team playing as humans, and the other as dinosaurs. Humans are given a wide-range of destructive weapons, and the dinosaurs get to use their natural gifts. The game is set to launch on PC this fall, and today we’ve learned that a PS4 version is also in development.

Primal Carnage was originally announced for the PS4 in 2013 as Primal Carnage: Genesis. There was a strong concept for a single-player narrative-driven game, but the project was too large in scope for Lukewarm Media, and Circle 5 Studios took over development. Circle 5 Studios is composed of a distributed network of designers and artists that grown out of the modding community of the original Primal Carnage. Circle 5 refocused their efforts into starting over with the brand and launch a multiplayer focused game on PS4 and PC. Primal Carnage: Genesis has been put on hold indefinitely, though the developers have not ruled out returning to it in the future. For now though, we get the intense multiplayer action of Primal Carnage: Extinction.

Wanna Get a New Xbox One for $250? Now You Can!

Today's news that Microsoft will run a lengthy promotion that takes $50 off the price of the Xbox One brings the base cost down to $350. You can actually get one for $100 less than that from the Microsoft Store right now, provided you've got some old hardware to trade in.

The Microsoft Store is currently running a promotion (separate from the one announced today) that offers a $100 credit toward a new Xbox One when trading in a working Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3. It's not new, but combined with today's news that you'll soon be able to buy a One for $350, this means you're looking at spending only $250 for an Xbox One (without Kinect). Not a bad deal.

Even better than that is using the trade-in credit to get the Assassin's Creed bundle (which includes copies of Assassin's Creed Unity and Black Flag) or the Sunset Overdrive bundle (which includes the game and a white console and controller) for $250.

You don't need to rush in order to get these prices--the $50 off deal runs from November 2-January 3, and the $100 trade-in offer expires on December 31. That should give you time to finish up any games you might be in the middle of or to track down the cables for an old system--Microsoft is accepting more than just the most recent models of 360 and PS3.

Square Enix confirmed with VideoGamer.com earlier today that Lords of the Fallen will actually release in Europe on October 28, the same day as the North American release. The publisher didn't reveal any reason for the change, but sooner is better than later—although three days is hardly what I'd call a game-changer.

'The Tomorrow Children' the PS4's most Special Game?!

Developer Q-Games has been relatively quiet about its upcoming PlayStation 4 exclusive The Tomorrow Children since Gamescom, but a trio of new videos and smattering of details on the European PlayStation Blog today have shed more light on the title.

The Tomorrow Children is set in a post-apocalyptic dystopia themed to resemble the Soviet Union. The story follows the aftermath of a failed experiment to unite all human consciousness. In this sandbox-style adventure, players will rebuild civilization in the Void — all that's left of the world — and mine materials for survival, all while holding off giant, otherworldly monsters that threaten to destroy what's left of humanity.

According to a post by president and executive producer Dylan Cuthbert, Q-Games is incorporating cinematography principles into its design for The Tomorrow Children, choosing to stray away from straight CG pictures in an effort to bring more realism into the game. The video above shows an example of this, a time-lapse of the game's inhabitants building a structure as the light changes from day to night. Cuthbert writes that this "color grading" process has been borrowed from film, and that video games have several advantages over movies in using it, including using a larger range of dynamic colors.

Q-Games also cooked up their own rendering method called "cascaded voxel cone ray tracing," which allows all pixels on screen to more easily "bounce" light and appear more true-to-life. A second video shows this works and offers a quick peek at combat in The Tomorrow Children, and a third video shows how this lighting coupled with unique geometry works for in-game materials.

The Tomorrow Children is currently in development with no launch date at this time.
