Fans of the Resident Evil franchise had gotten their hopes up that Resident Evil Revelations 2 would be a return to the classic survival horror gameplay of old. With Clair Redfield as the main character and the setting in a confined prison, it was the perfect opportunity to re-introduce genuine creepiness and difficult puzzles, instead of endless shooting and over the top quick time action sequences.
Unfortunately judging from a new 4 minute gameplay trailer from TGS, things haven’t really changed since Resident Evil 6. Claire is seen running around at Olympic athlete speed without any sense of fear, with the camera fixed behind her as if she’s ready to start blasting.
While this is a very early taste of the game and there might be some genuine frights worked in to the cinematic cutscenes and plot … this appears to be no closer to classic Resident Evil than the first Revelations. Perhaps that should have been obvious.
Where then does this leave Resident Evil 7? The main titles have all been over the top shooters since number 4, with 6 taking things to an absurd level (jumping out of helicopters, racing in vehicles etc). If they continue down this route they’re still alienating that core audience that are longing for the old school experience. Perhaps they think upping the graphics of the Gamecube remake is enough to keep them happy. Only time will tell if that’s true.
Both the remaster and Revelations 2 are scheduled for an early 2015 release, while there has yet to be an official announcement for Resident Evil 7.
