PS4 Outsold Xbox One Worldwide?!

Folks over at Ars Technica have done a little bit of number-crunching to try and estimate exactly how much Sony’s PlayStation 4 has outsold the Xbox One worldwide. Bear in mind that these figures are merely estimates that came as a result of an analysis, and do not indicate actual sales. But if Ars Technica’s report is anything to go by, then we’re looking at a difference of about 40 percent. According to the report:

Determining those ratios was not a simple process. As a starting point, we used Microsoft’s announcement that it had shipped five million units of the Xbox One as of mid-April. Since then, the company has only released quarterly reports on how many total Xbox systems have shipped, lumping the Xbox 360 and the Xbox One together, which obscures the new console’s true market performance.

For the PlayStation 4, the estimation process is a little simpler. Sony announced on August 12 that it had sold 10 million PS4 units through to consumers worldwide. That announcement came 130 days after the company announced seven million sales, meaning Sony had sold an average of just over 23,000 PS4 units a day in the intervening period.

Even assuming PS4 sales absolutely cratered after that, selling half as quickly, Sony would still have sold about 560,000 additional PS4 units in the 49 days from August 12 to the end of September. Add that, and we get a floor of about 10.56 million PS4s sold through the end of September, compared to a ceiling of about 7.42 million Xbox One units sold by the same time.

Dividing these numbers led the team to arrive at a figure of 42 percent. In other words, the PS4 roughly outsold the Xbox One by at least 40 percent. Ars Technica points out that the assumptions made in the report are actually pretty generous when it comes to the Xbox One, and quite pessimistic for the PS4. Therefore, the actual ratio by which the PS4 is outselling the Xbox One worldwide could be pretty damning for Microsoft.

Enter Next-Gen with Xbox One + Sunset Overdrive.

Head of Xbox Phil Spencer said that Microsoft might have been able to sell more units of its white Xbox One if it bundled it with Halo: The Master Chief Collection, but that he wanted to use the white console to promote a new IP, Sunset Overdrive.

"Would we have sold more white consoles if we put it with the Master Chief Collection? I think that would have been the safer route, but I'd love to add another great AAA franchise to the list of exclusives on Xbox and I think Sunset can be one of those things and I want to get behind it in a big way," Spencer said on IGN's Podcast Unlocked.

But why not have a special edition Xbox One for both games? As Spencer explained, one reason is that Microsoft doesn't want too many different versions of the console on the market. He also said that unlike the Xbox One Assassin's Creed Unity and Black Flag bundle, special editions of the consoles in different colors or hard drive size have to be planned out a year in advance.

Spencer said that Microsoft is currently talking about special editions that will release next year. He didn't say if one of them will be bundled with Halo 5: Guardians, but that the game will be a "big event" for Microsoft that year.

"Releasing new IP and making it stand out is always a challenge, especially when you got Call of Duty coming with a massive game, you've got Assassin's Creed coming with another great game, you've got Halo there, and here we are with Sunset and in the end the number of bundles and custom consoles you do is not a huge percentage of the game sales, but I wanted to put a stake out there, our first time working with Ted [Price] and the team Insomniac, that this is really a first party game for us and we're really behind it."

All that being said, Microsoft did announce a Halo: The Master Chief Collection white Xbox One bundle, but only for Brazil and "additional select markets," which at the moment does not include the United States.

The Sunset Overdrive Xbox One bundle will sell for £349.99/€399.99. It launches October 28 alongside Sunset Overdrive.

You Will be Able to Pass your PS4 Controller to a Friend on PSN with the New Sharing Feature.

On Oct. 28, the PlayStation 4 will receive a new feature dubbed Share Play as part of the console's 2.0 system software update. Share Play will let PS4 owners share their games over the internet, which Sony has likened to a "virtual couch." In a new video released by Sony Computer Entertainment, the company walks us through how that works and what the new feature really does.

With Share Play, PS4 owners virtually share a DualShock 4 controller. That feature lets another player take control of your game — to help you through a particularly tricky section of a game, for example — and lets another player join you for a local multiplayer session, virtually.

Those sharing features are available to other players, even if they don't own the game. But there is one important limitation: Share Play sessions are restricted to one hour.

Elaborating on his initial tease, Jones added that SOE "hope[s] to talk more about it really soon!" Of course, most of this was said in early-mid October, and seeing as how we're almost in November, I think SOE and I have different interpretations of the word "soon."

Slender: The Arrival gonna be Released for Wii U, PS4, and Xbox One.

According to a new rating on PEGI, Slender: The Arrival will be coming out for the Wii U, PS4, and Xbox One.

Back in September, the survival horror game was released digitally on Xbox 360 and PS3, suggesting we'll probably see a release on the respective digital marketplaces of the three now-gen consoles. Those console releases also saw new story content which was later released as DLC on the PC. It seems likely the new versions will also see these elements included.

We thought Slender: The Arrival was impressive and delivered a powerful horror experience, but found it bogged down by repetition, filler, and unfair enemies.
